Traffic Accidents in Kosova

What to Do After a Traffic Accident

Secure the Scene and Exchange Information In an accident that only causes material damage, make sure to move the vehicles off the road to avoid blocking traffic. Exchange personal and vehicle information with other participants, and fill out a European Accident Statement or the relevant document in Kosovo.

Document the Accident Scene If the police do not come to the scene to assess the situation, make sure to mark the position of the vehicles and photograph the damage, brake marks, or any other remains that provide evidence of the accident.

Notify the Police When Additional Arguments are Needed In case of a disagreement about who caused the accident, or if the vehicle is unidentified, unregistered, or the driver is under the influence of drugs/alcohol, or has no license, etc., you must notify the police to perform the verification and take appropriate legal action.

Where to Go Based on the Type of Accident

With a Vehicle Registered in Kosovo Seek compensation from the insurance company that issued the policy for the at-fault vehicle. The company will assess the damages and take care of the compensation for:

  • vehicle repairs,

  • lost value of the vehicle (if necessary),

  • personal injuries (physical pain, trauma, loss of work ability, etc.), in case of death or serious injury.

With an Unidentified or Uninsured Vehicle In cases where the accident involves a vehicle that is not insured or cannot be identified:

  • You can submit a compensation claim to the BKS, which will review and handle it according to the country's regulations.

With a Foreign-Plated Vehicle (not from Kosovo) In this case, the BKS or another insurance company that operates based on international agreements (e.g., the Green Card) can handle your request for assistance and payment.

  • under points 6 and 8, copy from your insurance documents (insurance policies or green cards) and
  • Under point 9, copy from your driver's license.
  • Mark the exact location of the impact (point 10)
  • Mark with a cross those variants (1-17) that relate to your accident (item 12) and finally state the total sum of the fields marked with a cross
  • draw a sketch of the traffic accident (item 13)

3. Provide the names and addresses of any eyewitnesses, especially if the opinions of the accident participants do not match. If the traffic police handled the incident, be sure to provide the name of the police station.
